The "afro" was not a true African hairstyle so why?
Why in the mid 1960's to 1970's did black people grow their hair it to me it just looked like they were trying to make a "Black" version of the hippie movement when white people grew their hair long.An African said that the "Afro" was western arrogance and although there was an african hairstlye similar to it its not like how it was in the mid/late 60's 70's!Blacks should have really gotten into their african heritage like read up books on Africa!
They did read books on Africa, they also read books on the Black Experience in America. It was a Hippie time and a Black American Awareness time but they were two separate events.. It was the birth of a renaissance of Black American culture and a reaffirming of roots to Africa. Damn right an "Afro" was western arrogance and the fist held high was a power symbol to some and a symbol of brotherhood to others. It is obvious that you know little of that time period and are trying to discount the cultural revolution that occurred in that period. You and your "African" were not there and could not have understood it if you tried.
